Former Leon County Health Department to be included in new development

Plans for a new development along the northeast edge of Tallahassee’s Cascades Park are firming up. The project now contains lots of input from a community advisory group.

As now envisioned, the final two city blocks along east Gaines Street will have 300 units of rental housing, a wellness center, office space and a 120-room boutique hotel. But Community Redevelopment Agency Executive Director Roxanne Manning liked its other amenities, too.

“This project will provide very exciting public spaces right next to Cascades Park, which is the jewel of our community,” she said during Tuesday’s (5/23) update on the development.

Although the old Leon County Jail, now known as the “Firestone Building”, will not be part of the plan due to its deteriorated condition. But developer Shawn McIntyre of North American Properties revealed the Bloxham Building, the former Leon County Health Department next door, will be saved.
