Site preparation in store for Cascades project

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) – Crews demolished buildings in the “Bloxam Annex” on Gaines Street Wednesday morning.

In about an hour, what was once a residential facility and the former WPA district office was no more.

The demolitions are part of site preparation for the Cascades project.

It’s the largest piece of economic development in recent history and is designed to make way for the next generation of Tallahassee residents.

“When you bring people living in downtown when you bring those activities you bring life to it. So that’s what you’re seeing here, that’s another piece that’s important in the puzzle,” said Planning Director Cherie Bryant. “When you have development occurring, a mixed use development with the homes and the retail next to the state offices and other sources of employment, you have opportunities.”
