The Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) unanimously voted to grant $297,220 to Short Hike LLC to convert the old city Waterworks building into a family-friendly brewery.

The building currently on the national register for historic places, was the city’s first water system. Located at Gaines and Gadsden streets, the site hasn’t pumped water since 1958 and has since been a graffiti-tagged, shell of its former self.

This new craft brewery is slated to open in early 2023 and will be a center for safe community gatherings in the downtown area, said Alison Denny, one of project’s founding members.

In addition to serving craft beer, the space will host food trucks as well as provide child friendly snacks and games on the lawn. There will also be a fenced in area for dogs and a bike, walk and scooter route between other local watering holes and the Waterworks building.
